Bagtharia drcsomalia. A drastic increase in displacement in due to drought is putting additional strain on scarce resources in existing and new IDP settlements. This is leading to a deterioration of humanitarian indicators for IDPs in a number of areas, including for nutrition, protection, access to water and sanitation and shelter.
Over , of these have been displaced as a result of the drought. In addition, conflict related displacements in have reached approximately , people. Provisional figures from the PRMN indicate that 23, individuals have been newly internally displaced countrywide between 1 and 22 October , compared to 42, people displaced during the same period in September. Of these, 17, were drought-related displacements, while 5, of the new displacements were triggered by conflict or insecurity, predominantly from Qoryooley districts in Lower Shabelle.
As people continue to flee their homes, the number of IDP sites continue to increase. Living conditions in the IDP settlements and urban centres continue to deteriorate, with displaced people unable to meet their basic needs due to inconsistent service provision or exclusion from accessing these services.
The lack of access to basic services contributes to public health risks, preventable deaths and increased gender-based violence, especially for women and girls. An estimated , internally displaced people IDPs are in urban and peri-urban areas in Galgaduud region.
The majority of the displaced are women, children and the elderly. In June and July , following below average GU rains, nearly 35, pastoralists migrated from Galgaduud region to areas in Puntland, Somaliland and Hiraan region, with their livestock in search of pasture and water.
