I had a fantastic time in Lithuania. My visit took place over two days and I managed to see Kaunas and Vilnius. I had previously asked for advice on how to fit as much of Kaunas into one morning. It was very good advice and I even had time left over to visit the Akropolis shopping centre. I flew into Kaunas on Saturday night. I found the hostel and went out to explore Laisves aleya the main street.
Next morning I woke up early. I walked along the banks of the Nemunas river to the old town. There was a path that went straight down by the river. Only for the last part of the journey to the old town did I walk down there. There were some fishermen fishing early in the morning. As I walked past one of them holding a beer can asked me something in Lithuanian. Instinct told me not to answer and I shrugged politely looking confused. Then he started calling out a word that in Spanish French and Italian I know means prostitute not sure about in Lithuanian Maybe it was because I didn t answer him but I thought it was best to walk fast and get back on to the main road.
Maybe I d walked into an area known for prostitutes? The old town was lovely. It was empty early on a Sunday morning but the weather was perfect for photos. Then I walked up toward the hill. I managed to miss the Funiclar on the way up and walked up the stairs. Though found it for the way down. It was great fun. Bought ticket to Vilnius no proble,. Had a lovely lunch in Alias ritas off Laisves ayeas. Gedimos tower. Unfortunately the Funiclar was closed on Monday and the gate was shut as they were doing repairs.
I was really disappointed not to see it. However I will see it next time I am in Vilnius. The KGB museum was interesting. With hindsight I would have probably chosen Gedimos tower over it. TV tower. The tower costs 21 litas to go up. I had a glass of wine and a Palanga and it came to a total of only 10litas, amazing when you consider the view and location.
My trip to Lithuania was my first as a solo traveller. It was a brilliant trip and I would highly recommend this country to everyone. I loved the food, its very hearty and filling. I had been so worried about eating out alone. I kept myself busy by updating my itinery, reading up on things I wanted to see or studying the maps. Even some older people gave speaking English a really good go.
